COOK COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A new report from the office of the Cook County treasurer shows south suburban homeowners will pay record-high property tax bills.
The average homeowner in the south and southwest suburbs of Illinois saw a 20 percent increase in their 2023 property tax bills, according to Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas’ new report.
That's the largest increase in more than 30 years, according to the treasurer.
Thirteen of the fifteen areas seeing tax bill increases of more than 30 percent are predominately Black populations.
In Dixmoor and Phoenix, the median tax bill more than doubled. Homeowners were particularly hit hard in Park Forest, where the average residential bill rose by nearly 60 percent.
According to the analysis, Chicago taxes increased by nearly three percent.
Across Cook County, property taxes rose $700 million.
