Southern Illinois man volunteers to fight in Ukraine

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Millions of Ukrainians have fled their country to escape the Russian invasion, but a southern Illinois man is traveling overseas to fight on their behalf.

22-year-old Evansville resident Tristan Lombardo is currently in Poland.

“Right now all I have is a lot of medical supplies, brought old clothes, money and spirit, I guess, would be the best thing to say,” Lombardo said.

Lombardo has no military experience and no direct relations to Ukrainians, but feels like taking up arms is the "right thing to do."

“There’s only one way to end the fighting," he said. "And that’s to be willing to fight and die. If we just give up, then Russia’s going to have their way with it.”

Lombardo said he got the idea to volunteer after watching the news and reading about the war.

Lombard plans to make his way from Poland into Ukraine early this week.
