CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Southland College Prep Charter School in Richton Park has come up with an elaborate way to have students attend commencement ceremonies in person.
Southland students are attending a dozen 90-minute commencement ceremonies over four days; a dozen graduates and their families at each, all masked and separated in the school’s field house.
Dr. Blondean Davis, the CEO, talked about the plans during an online celebration of the fact that each of the graduating seniors was accepted to a college or university.
"I acknowledge that the Class of 2021 is probably the strongest class we've had to march, simply because you've had to overcome some things that no other classes have had to do. I am excited, because very soon I am going to have an opportunity to see all of you. You've been too far away," she said.
"You know, we are having these small graduations, doing it safely, but when you come in I am going to count on your energy, I am going to count on your enthusiasm, and what you are going to get from me is the most beautiful graduation that we could put together, because you absolutely deserve it."
They’re videotaping all 12 ceremonies and they’ll be edited together, so that each of the 138 graduates appears together.
