(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Leaders in Aurora say the state's second-largest city has removed hundreds of water service lines containing lead, but it could take decades to replace all of them.

Since 2018, Aurora has removed more than 1,500 water service lines containing lead.

Jason Bauer, Aurora's assistant director of public works, said the city might still have to remove nearly 18,000 additional water lines.

He says that process might not be completed until 2060, unless Aurora gets more federal or state funding to speed up the process.

Tests of water coming from service lines that contain lead show levels that are not considered hazardous, Bauer said.
