Hammond police said a woman in her mid-20s is dead after she was shot during an argument at the Walmart at 1100 5th Ave. Monday morning.

Hammond Police Captain Steve Kellogg said officers arrived at the scene shortly after 9 a.m.

"An off duty police officer working security at Walmart called in a shooting that had just taken place," he said. "When we arrived, we had realized the off-duty officer along with security had placed the offender in custody."

He said the shooting happened after the employee and the male suspect got into an argument.

"At some point it turned physical at which point the male suspect retrieved a firearm and shot the female multiple times," he said.

Kellogg said the woman died at the scene. After the shooting, the suspect walked a couple aisles over and sat on the ground and put his hands up until police arrived.

Further details, including what started the argument, were not immediately available.

There is no ongoing threat to the pubic, though the Walmart was closed for the rest of the day Monday.

An investigation is underway.
