(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Opening Day at River Bend Golf Club in Lisle is typically March 1, but when the last day of February gives you spring-like feels, you take advantage and open a day early.

Pro shop manager Ron Schneteger said lots of golfers made tee times Friday.

“It is a beautiful day and, you know, there’s so many people that want to get out of the house,” Schnetger said. “It’s that time of the year. And, I’m looking right now and seeing my first two golfers are on the 9th green finishing their round.”

Meanwhile, at Cog Hill Golf Club in Lemont, general manager Troy Newport said two of its four courses were open with plenty of golfers.

“I’m from Indiana originally, and I’ve only been in the Chicago area for about five years, and I tell people Chicago golfers are fanatics. They will play in some really, what we would consider, unplayable weather. I bet there’ll be guys in shorts out here today,” said Newport.

Newport says golfers come out of the woodwork at the hint of nice weather.

“We had a great February last year,” he added. “The last part of the month was really, really nice. We had a lot of golfers, and we haven’t had that this year so, probably some pent-up demand and people wanting to get out of the house, for sure.”

Temps are expected to dip a bit over the weekend, but Newport said that’s perfect for any golfer who wants to experience indoor golf at the annual Golf Show in Rosemont.
