The Transportation Security Administration is extending its face mask requirement into the fall.

Whether you're in an airport, on a plane, on a bus or in any part of the TSA's transportation network, face masks will continue to be required through September 23.

The previous requirement from the TSA had an expiration date of May 11.

“The federal mask requirement throughout the transportation system seeks to minimize the spread of COVID-19 on public transportation,” said Darby LaJoye, the Senior Official Performing the Duties of the TSA Administrator.

“Right now, about half of all adults have at least one vaccination shot and masks remain an important tool in defeating this pandemic. We will continue to work closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to evaluate the need for these directives and recognize the significant level of compliance thus far.”

Those who don't follow the mandate could face a fine of up to $1,500, depending on the number of times a person violates the rule.

Exceptions to the face mask requirement are made for children under the age of 2 and for people with certain disabilities.
