EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Nassau County jail inmate was found unresponsive in his cell and was later pronounced dead at a hospital, police said late Wednesday.

Nassau County police said the 45-year-old man was found by a corrections officer at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital about an hour later, police said. He has not been identified at this time.

The cause of death is unclear and is under investigation by police as well as the medical examiner, authorities said. The state attorney general's office is also investigating.

It is the second death at the jail in just over three months.

Nikita Pertsev, of Brooklyn, died Nov. 23 of an apparent drug overdose, Newsday reported.

Police said Pertsev had suffered "a medical episode."
