NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An 18-year-old man has been indicted for stabbing his 16-year-old girlfriend to death during a domestic dispute in Harlem last month, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
Zyaire Crumbley is charged in New York State Supreme Court with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery after the killing of Saniyah Lawrence.
According to the indictment and statements made on the record in court, Crumbley and Lawrence were at an acquaintance's apartment at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 11 when they got into an argument over a phone call he received.
Crumbley attempted to leave the apartment with the victim’s phone. When she tried to take her phone back, Crumbley refused and told her, "get back or I’ll stab you."
They allegedly struggled over the phone before Crumbley stabbed her in the neck. He fled the apartment with the knife and her phone.
Lawrence was taken to Harlem Hospital by ambulance, where she was pronounced dead about one hour later due to the stab wound, prosecutors said.
"Saniyah Lawrence's young life was tragically cut short by this shocking crime allegedly committed by her boyfriend," said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in a statement. "My thoughts are with Ms. Lawrence's family and loved ones as they experience this unimaginable pain."
The indictment comes after Lawrence's grandmother, Denise Jackson, told 1010 WINS after the killing that she was unaware of any major problems between the two.
"I never heard of abuse," she said. "Like little arguments, like boyfriend and girlfriend, you know, like teenager stuff she would go through."
