NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Brooklyn man has admitted to killing a 61-year-old woman in an unprovoked rock attack in Corona last November, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Thursday.

Elisaul Perez, 33, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter after striking Guiying Ma in the head with a large rock while she was sweeping the sidewalk and street on the block of a friend's home on Nov. 26, 2021.

"Her family, friends and neighbors still mourn the loss of Guiying Ma, whose life was senselessly taken last year in this brutal attack," Katz said. "The defendant will now be held to account for an unprovoked attack that robbed a family of their loved one."

According to the charges, Ma was observed on surveillance footage sweeping the sidewalk and street in front of 38th Avenue near 97th Street around 8:00 a.m. Moments later, Perez picked up a large rock and struck Ma in the head. After Ma fell to the ground, Perez struck her in the head with the rock a second time.

The grandmother was taken to a local hospital after the attack and underwent emergency surgery for severe head trauma and brain injuries. Ma died after a three-month hospitalization due to complications from her injuries.

The attack against Ma, who was Asian, was initially investigated as a hate crime, but Perez has not been charged with a hate crime.

According to Katz, Supreme Court Justice Michael Yavinsky has indicated that he will sentence Perez to 20 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, on Jan. 10.
