The controversy continues surrounding a confederate flag that has been flying high above I-85 in Spartanburg County. A circuit court judge has ordered that the flag be removed or lowered 30 feet.
The Sons Of Confederate Veterans Group has owned the property for several years and put up the 120 foot flag pole in 2022. Court records show the pole was put up without the required permit. In 2023, A Spartanburg County Board sided with the group.
Then in 2024 the board's decision was overturned. While the group did not share the height of the flagpole with county officials prior to putting it up. However, they did seek approval for the structure from the Federal Aviation Administration due to the height of the flagpole.
The judge says that acknowledges that the structure is a distraction for planes and therefore is the same distraction for drivers on I-85. The case is expected to be heard in the State Court Of Appeals.
