No, you cannot deploy a drone to help you catch more fish.
That’s a reminder from the Texas Parks and Wildlife department, who have been inundated with questions about the legality of using a drone to fish.
The TPWD said in a statement per KXAN, “Due to technological advancements with … drones, now widely available, [TPWD] has noticed an increase in questions connected to their use in relation to fishing and wildlife.
“Some of the most frequent questions have been about the legality of using drones for deploying bait by surf or bank fisherman.”
The TPWD references the 1956 Federal Airborne Hunting Act, which prohibits people from shooting at wildlife from an aircraft, or using an aircraft to harass or take animals.
The operative word her is “take,” which means you aren’t allowed to attach a fishing line and hook to a drone, but it also prohibits the use of aircraft in ways that assist in taking animals.
Such as using a drone to deploy bait.
So sorry technologically advanced fishermen; next take you hit the lake leave the drone at home.
