A Fourth of July visitor to Pescadero State Beach discovered a dead body wash ashore, and an investigation is underway to determine just what happened.

At 12:55 p.m. on Sunday, the visitor saw a person, fully clothed, whom San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ron Albertson said was "obviously deceased" and "appeared to have been in the water for some time."

Sheriff's deputies, California State Park Rangers and Cal Fire firefighters responded to the scene.

The person's identity hadn’t been determined as of Sunday afternoon, and officials didn’t provide a cause of death, either.

Albertson wrote in a statement that the San Mateo County Coroner's Office and Sheriff's investigators were looking into the person’s death. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office asked anyone with information to call their anonymous tip line at 1-800-547-2000.
