MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (KNX) – Four of the 11 victims in Saturday night’s deadly Monterey Park mass shooting have been identified.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office identified My Nhan, 65, and Lilan Li, 63. The names of the other eight victims have been withheld, pending notification of their relatives.
During a press conference late Monday afternoon, Xiujuan Yu, 57, and Valentino Alvero, 68, were identified as victims in the shooting.
Earlier, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced one of the victims who was hospitalized died from "extensive injuries."
Three other patients are still being treated at County-USC, with one in serious condition. The other two are "recovering."
"Our heroic staff at LAC+USC Medical Center have worked tirelessly to care for the four victims entrusted to our care," Jorge Orozco, CEO of the hospital, said. "Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we are saddened to share that one of the victims has succumbed to their extensive injuries. We want to express our deepest sympathies to their families and loved ones."
On Saturday night, authorities said 72-year-old Huu Can Tran went into Star Ballroom Dance Studio, killing 10 people and wounding an additional 10. Around 20 minutes later, he went to Lai Lai Ballroom in Alhambra and began shooting; however, at least two people were able to take the gun away from him. Tran fled from the dance hall.
Tran was found dead in a white van that authorities believe he used to flee from the dance hall in Alhambra. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said in a press conference early Sunday evening.
A motive in the shooting has yet to be determined.
