Airlines continue to cancel flights into Southern California as workforce strains under spread of Omicron

LOS ANGELES (KNX) — U.S. airlines canceled hundreds of flights on Wednesday as COVID-19 cases spike thanks to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

More than 850 flights operated by United, Delta, JetBlue, and other airlines were canceled by noon on Wednesday. That followed a total of 1,300 cancellations on Tuesday due to staffing shortages.

Los Angeles International Airport reported 42 canceled incoming flights. Orange County’s John Wayne Airport reported five.

Airlines have called on the federal government to shorten the quarantine period for flight crew members that have contracted COVID-19, though union representation for flight attendants has pushed back, insisting that the 10-day period remain in place.
