KNX Heroes: From business setback to social service

Long Beach, Calif. (KNX) - Keith and Rachel LukaSavage, founders of Savage Tacos, have turned their passion for food into a lifeline for the unhoused in Long Beach.

Forced to pivot from their original business, Cafe Bistro, due to COVID lockdowns, the couple turned their focus to a new venture.

During the transition from working private events to a food truck on the road, they quickly recognized the pressing needs of the local homeless community.

The LukaSavages made it their mission to feed the unhoused, and by partnering with Care Closet, a Long Beach nonprofit organization, the team now provides meals to 50-70 people every day, rain or shine.

Keith tells KNX reporter Heather Jordan that the mission statement for Savage Tacos, "people over profit," reflects their dedication to helping others before focusing on financial gains.

Every morning, the LukaSavages witness the impact of their work through the smiles, conversations, and gratitude of the people they serve.

For the LukaSavages, their mission goes beyond just providing food; they are dedicated to helping the unhoused reintegrate into society, even exploring the possibility of employing a few in the community on their food truck.

As Keith puts it, "If I can get one [person off the streets], we did it."
