RIVERSIDE (CNS) - A 37-year-old woman was fatally struck by a commuter train Wednesday as she and a friend walked along railroad tracks in downtown Riverside.

Jacqueline Sweet of Riverside was killed at about 6 a.m. as she traversed Union Pacific Railroad tracks near the intersection of Commerce and Third streets, according to the Riverside Police Department.

"The woman was walking with a companion when she was accidentally struck by a Metrolink train," police spokesman Officer Ryan Railsback said. "Her companion managed to avoid the train."

The surviving party was not identified.

It was unclear why Sweet and the other person were walking on the tracks. There is an at-grade rail crossing at Commerce and Third, with flashing lights and gates that activate when a train is transiting the location.

"There does not appear to be anything suspicious involved," Railsback said. "This was an accident."

No one on board the train was injured.

Union Pacific Railroad police were handling the investigation.
