Greyson Chance is not holding back when it comes to his former mentor Ellen DeGeneres.
Video of Chance performing Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” in front his schoolmates went viral in 2010, and landed Chance a deal with Ellen’s newly-created eleveneleven record label.
Ellen hooked up Chance with high-profile managers, a booking agent, a publicist, a brand agent but Chance came to learn a different side of Ellen he, and the rest of the world, was apparently used to on television.
In a new bombshell interview with Rolling Stone, Chance claims he’s “never met someone more manipulative, more self-centered and more blatantly opportunistic” than Ellen.
He recalls one evening, after he had just opened for Miranda Cosgrove, that Ellen demanded he watch an advanced copy of Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never documentary. Though he was “exhausted” from the performance, Ellen wanted him to watch it immediately because she wanted him to “model his career” after Bieber’s.
When Chance didn’t make viewing the doc a high priority, Ellen apparently called his mother, and berated her.
“What type of mother are you?” Chance recalled hearing the comedian allegedly ask his mom before she purportedly said to him directly, “Disappointed isn’t even remotely what I’m feeling right now.”
Chance said Ellen had similar behavior towards every aspect of his career, “She would come in and look at a rack, yell at stylists, berate people in front of me and say, ‘This is what you’re wearing on the show,'” he claimed. “She was just degrading to people.”
Chance alleges that when his album and ticket sales fell in 2012, Ellen “completely removed” herself from him and “completely abandoned” him, and though he tried getting in touch with her, he heard no response.
After he was dropped by Ellen, Chance still made appearances on her show, because he knew the positive impact it would have on his career.
He recalled one particular moment in 2019 when Ellen “hugged” him during soundcheck, “and she said, ‘How have you been?’ And that just killed me inside because I was like, ‘What do you mean how have I f–king been? Where have you been?'”
An insider close to Ellen told Rolling Stone that Chance did not make any complaints before or immediately after the 2019 appearance on the show, and noted that it’s “convenient” he came out with these allegations ahead of his latest album release.
Ellen declined Rolling Stone’s request for a comment.
