On Monday evening, a man suspected of breaking into a southwest Arlington home on Queensborough Drive was shot by a man who lives nearby.

"They had noticed a man they didn't recognize walking around their neighborhood acting kind of suspicious," says Tim Ciesco, Arlington Police spokesman. "And they saw this man go into the backyard of a neighbor that was not home at the time, so they thought he might be breaking in."

It turns out, their suspicion was right.

"A neighbor was contacted and asked to go check out the situation going on over at the house," says Ciesco, "and he found the burglar with several items that people believed to come from inside his neighbor's house."

The neighbor then confronted the suspected burglar and ended up shooting him one time.

"The neighbor, initially, told the suspect that the police were on their way and that he needed to stay there and that he was going to jail," Ciesco says. "I guess the suspect still tried to run for it, and at one point, the neighbor described (that) the suspect started coming towards him, which is why he fired the shot."

It's unknown which part of the body the suspect was shot in.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

"We do plan to charge him with burglary of a habitation once he's released from the hospital," says Ciesco. "We did find evidence that would support the claims that he broke into this house and took items from there."

The suspect's identity will be released once he's formally charged.

The neighbor, meanwhile, is currently not facing any charges.

"The incident is still under investigation," Ciesco says; "but at this time, nobody else has been charged with a crime."
