A bipartisan group of State lawmakers is now calling for Governor Greg Abbott to stop the execution of the first Hispanic woman ever on death row.

In 2008, Melissa Lucio was convicted of murdering her two-year-old daughter. She claims the daughter fell down the stairs, while the state contends she was guilty of child abuse.

Republican State Representative Lacey Hull is one of the lawmakers calling for the Governor to block Lucio’s April execution date.

"The facts simply do not support any conclusion that Miss Lucio committed capital murder and is deserving of the ultimate punishment," Hull said.

The lawmakers don’t believe Lucio got fair trial.

"The State of Texas has an obligation to make sure that it never executes a person for a crime that they may not have committed," State Representative Senfronia Thompson said.
