PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 2-year-old girl and her mother were shot by stray gunfire while sitting on the front stoop of their North Philadelphia home Wednesday night, according to police.
The shooting took place around 8 p.m. near North Front and West Albanus streets, near Olney Charter High School. The toddler was shot once in each leg, and the 30-year-old woman was shot in the side of the head and in several other places throughout her body.
“She was sitting on her porch with her 2-year-old. We believe they were both innocent victims, as sad as that is but as often is the case,” said Deputy Commissioner James Kelly.
They were both taken to the hospital. The little girl is in stable condition, but the mother is extremely critical.
Police said two groups of people were shooting at each other. Investigators found at least 35 spent shell casings at the scene.
“It’s a tragedy,” said Kelly. “Mom’s in serious conditions, critical condition. Thank God the baby will be OK, but a 2-year-old baby shot is a complete tragedy.”
A person of interest has been detained, and several weapons were recovered.
