PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The family of the girl who was shot and killed outside a high school football game is once again asking why the officers who likely fired the deadly shots are still employed.
Eight-year-old Fanta Bility was shot and killed outside an Academy Park High School football game on Aug. 27.
A grand jury is reviewing criminal charges, but the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office said “with near certainty” it was gunfire from police officers that killed Fanta and injured three others.
Attorney Bruce Castor, who is representing her family, said relatives are once again calling on Sharon Hill to fire the police officers who were involved.
“It’s so obviously negligent and reckless to fire into a moving car without regard for the background and people standing there,” he said. “There’s no need for use of deadly force that I can see under those circumstances. And, the family can’t understand why Sharon Hill hasn’t fired these guys.”
The officers involved are currently on desk duty.
An investigation by the District Attorney’s Office found there were several gunshots about a block from the stadium entrance as fans were leaving the game. Around the same time those shots were fired, a car turned on the street near the stadium entrance, and that’s when police opened fire.
“Fantas family cannot understand why Sharon Hill fails to recognize the fact that in continuing to employ these officers, it is continuing to victimize all those touched by this tragedy,” Castor added.
