Jason Wright: Commanders ownership change is 'going to be a substantial lift'

An ownership change of the Commanders seems imminent, and team president Jason Wright acknowledges that whenever a sale is completed, it will improve the franchise’s outlook and image.

“It’s going to be a substantial lift,” Wright told The Athletic’s Ben Standig. “Better projection, I know that. It’s a substantial lift, and Dan and Tanya [Snyder] know that. That’s not something that they’re unaware of.”

Snyder has multiple bidders to ponder, including from a group headlined by billionaire Josh Harris and joined by Mitchell Rales and Magic Johnson. Whoever takes on ownership of the Commanders will be inheriting a team that drew the lowest attendance figures in the NFL last season, have struggled to sustain any sense of success on the field in years, and have battled to rehabilitate its image amid a toxic workplace culture within the organization.

But the mere fact that Snyder won’t be at the helm anymore will be enough to immediately improve the organization on both the financial and image front, something Wright doesn’t deny.

Still, Wright says the Snyder family, despite being on their way out, will be actively pulling for whoever takes over to turn the franchise around.

“They still care about this franchise,” Wright told Standig. “They’re not going to sell the team and start rooting against us. They know it will be good for everybody. We’re going to get this thing done.”
