Commanders head coach Ron Rivera and GM Martin Mayhew didn’t have much to say regarding Chase Young’s fifth year option during Thursday’s press conference.

Asked whether the team had made a decision whether to pick up the option or not, Rivera kept it blunt.

“We will wait until May 2,” Rivera said, noting the deadline to make such a decision.

Asked to clarify whether the team already made a decision but won’t reveal it until the deadline, Rivera still wouldn’t budge.

“Well, that’s what we have,” Rivera said. “We have until May 2.”

The decision will likely not be an easy one, as Young, a former No. 2 overall pick, is loaded with talent but also carries a loaded injury history.

Young would be paid roughly $17.5 million in 2024 if Washington picks up his option. If not, he will be playing for a new contract in the upcoming season, which the Commanders could follow up by either offering a new deal, placing the franchise tag on him, or letting him leave in free agency.
