Rankings are great, but the best way to get to a solid conversation and avoid getting into pedantic gripes on quarterbacks is to group them into tiers. CBS Sports' Will Brinson had all the quarterbacks of the NFL into seven tiers (the top one of Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes, Cincinatti's Joe Burrow, and Buffalo's Josh Allen barely needs to be discussed).
Before getting into where the Washington Commanders' second-year QB Sam Howell ranks in Brinson's list, Craig Hoffman and Denton Day broke down the tiers and got into debates about if anybody from two should jump to three or if anybody from tier four should jump to three.
The QBs in Howell's tier: Arizona's Kyler Murray, Green Bay's Jordan Love, Tampa Bay's Baker Mayfield, and Atlanta's Desmond Ridder who all fell into Tier 6 of seven, which was the "No Clue, Man" level, above only "The Rookies" (Carolina's Bryce Young, Houston's CJ Stroud, and Indianapolis Anthony Richardson).
For those curious, Tier 5 "Future Potential 'Can Win With Them' Guys (a reference to the title of Tier 4) included New England's Mac Jones, Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett, and San Francisco's Brock Purdy (with a question mark).
Brinson admitted he wanted to put the Commanders QB (and the Packers' Love) higher because they have an "upside the public is unnecessarily scoffing at" but the above tier didn't fit them and "I wouldn't bet my life on either being a good or great NFL quarterback."
And Hoffman said he would rather Howell be in Tier 6 than Tier 5 because it shows there is potential and the ranking for Howell is appropriate. Listen to the full segment on the player above!
