A Twitter ask gone viral: apparently, the Washington Commanders’ official Twitter account sent a DM to the current owner of the handle @WashRedskinsNFL, which is verified, asking that handle’s owner to add something to their name (which is just Washington Redskins) so it doesn’t appear to be an official account affiliated with the team.
It went viral because the owner of the account posted the DM and asked what they should do…and that Tweet is up to seven figures in views.
But were the Commanders wrong? The Junkies don’t think so.
“I don’t think the Commanders are out of bounds for that ask one bit,” Cakes said. “If the Commanders wanted to be D-bags about it, they could have threatened legal action, but I’d assume they still have the trademarks for that name and image – that’s their IP that is basically being stolen, so I don’t have a problem with it at all. I don’t usually defend the Commanders, but I’m pro-Commanders here!”
EB agreed: “Not at all, and I’m stunned, because it shows you people want to be angry just to be angry – even Thom Loverro! Come on now, this is not a big request; it’s obvious there could be confusion and you could easily be duped into thinking it’s an official account.”
That’s something from Bickel, who admittedly rarely defends the team, and even the producers agreed with him and Cakes – although Drab noted this is nothing out of the ordinary.
“How many millions of accounts are out there that could be confused like that?” he asked, before Valdez chimed in with examples of that confusion, or some ideas about how they could scam fans.
“There’s no reason for this to mushroom cloud,” EB said. “It’s not about making money, it’s protecting your brand. It’s a normal request made in a respectful way.”
“But that’s not their brand anymore,” Bish chimed in. “They’re the Washington Commanders, so their brand wouldn’t be Redskins.”
EB then replied with an example about a fake Jason Bishop account, which maybe changed Lurch’s tune a little bit, and the guys then discussed maybe some “compensation” the team could give to help the process along – take a listen to the whole discussion above!
