The Junkies ponder what may make the Commanders trade down - or up - in first round of 2023 NFL Draft

The Commanders have the No. 16 overall pick, and there’s been lots of conjecture about where they may go with the pick, including different thoughts from our own hosts about Bijan Robinson, Hendon Hooker, and even Will Levis if he’s available.

But what about the idea of the Commanders trading back from that spot to pick up some extra draft capital?

On Friday, the Junkies replayed some audio from GM Martin Mayhew’s Thursday press conference about possibly trading up or down in the first round and what those ideas might entail, and it seemed like he was more enthusiastic about moving back to pick up more draft capital than he would be about moving up, both this year and in general.

But what do the Junkies think?

“I think they see what they got last year, the value they got moving back from 11 and still getting the guy they wanted in Jahan Dotson,” Cakes said, “and they realize this year they can still get a running back and get multiple picks if the guy they covet isn’t there.”

“I don’t mind a team moving back in the draft, as long as the picks they’re acquiring are in the same draft,” Bish replied. “If you’re getting future picks, that doesn’t really move me, but if you’re getting multiple picks in the same draft, I think it could be worth it.”

The Junkies then mentioned the mock draft from Thursday that Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus (the same one Grant & Danny mentioned Thursday) that had C.J. Stroud going 10th overall and the Commanders taking Will Levis at 16 – and this is a case where, they believe, if someone like Stroud is still there at 10, that’s when you move up.

“If C.J. Stroud is there and you have him rated high, I think it would be worth looking to trade up and get him,” JP said.

“If he’s their second-rated quarterback on the board with a Top 5 grade and he’s still there at 10 or 11, I wouldn’t be shocked if they pulled the trigger and dealt an extra first-round pick to move up,” Cakes added.

EB and Bish disagreed, thinking there’s no chance Stroud would, or should, be there at 10.

“Quarterbacks slip, but usually they slip if they’re projected to be the 10th pick,” Bish said. “If they’re projected to be a Top 3 pick, they don’t slip to 10.”

“I think he’s being honest, and their whole mind frame is that if they do anything, it’s going to be trading down,” EB said. “If you trade up, you have to think it’s a sure thing, because it’s a roll of the dice with any of these guys.”

But what if it’s not a quarterback, but someone they covet at another position?

“We’ll settle for the next best who is not that much less than the other guy,” EB said, with Bish positing that it also depends on what they have to give up to move up a certain number of spots.

“They don’t seem particularly daring,” EB replied to that. “That’s not Ron’s M.O.; he’s going to play it safe, and that’s ether staying put or moving down – and moving down, if you can acquire another second or something, then that might be worthwhile.”
