The Washington Football Team announced the signing of cornerback Darryl Roberts on Friday.
Terms of the deal were disclosed, neither by the team nor reported otherwise.
Roberts, 30, got his start as a seventh-round pick by the Patriots in 2015 (Marshall), but after a promising training camp, was placed on Injured Reserve after injuring his wrist in his preseason debut and was released days later.
A year later, Roberts was claimed by the Jets with whom he'd spend the next four seasons (2016-19), making three interceptions with 27 passes defensed and 155 total tackles.
Roberts lasted one year into a three-year, $18 million extension he signed with the Jets in March 2019, before being released in March 2020. He later signed a one-year deal with the Lions in April 2020, starting five games — out of 11 played — while registering one interception, six passes defensed and 39 total tackles.
According to SB Nation's Lions blog Pride of Detroit, Roberts played mostly as a nickel corner in Detroit.
Washington continues to piece together the backend of its defense, last week signing William Jackson III, one of the top corners on the free agency market, while letting homegrown product Fabian Moreau, a third-round pick in 2017, walk. Moreau signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons this week.
