Grand Island, N.Y. (WBEN) - An eighth grader from the Grand Island Central School District died Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle on Grand Island. The incident occurred on South Parkway near Broadway. An Erie County Sheriff's spokesperson confirmed that the driver of the vehicle is a juvenile and stated that no charges have been filed. The spokesperson also said that there is no evidence of impairment, but no further details have been released.
As patrol officers arrived on at scene, they immediately took over life-saving efforts being performed by a witness to the incident.
Patrol continued CPR with an AED attached until Grand Island Fire and Twin City Ambulance arrived on scene. Despite efforts, Twin City ambulance crews ultimately confirmed the victim to be deceased.
The Grand Island teen has been identified as Leah Mayer, who is being described as selfless, a loyal friend, and a constant source of positivity.
"Her parents, Amy and Adam, are heartbroken, as we all are, and have asked that we remember Leah for the incredible light she brought to those around her," said Grand Island Central School District Superintendent Dr. Brian Graham on the district's Facebook page.
"Her energy seemed to glow from within, and she was known as a 'voice' for others, always ready to stand up and support those around her. Her presence will be missed dearly, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her."
Graham says grief support services will continue to be made available at both the Grand Island Middle and High School campuses on Friday. Services are available for any students, faculty, and staff who may benefit from them. School counselors, social workers, school psychologists and administrators will also be on-hand to provide support and care needed.
