(WBEN) - What has been a relatively bizarre winter season in the Buffalo-Niagara and Western New York region played out Tuesday with a day that began with rain, transitioned to snow, then back to rain, all as ferocious winds whipped across the region.
The wind, mainly non-traditionally southeasterly and as strong at 77 mph in some locations, led to downed trees, power lines and power out for tens of thousands
Officially at the Buffalo Airport, a gust of 70 mph was clocked by forecasters at the National Weather Service.
An empty tractor trailer blew over on the state Thruway near Fredonia on Tuesday morning, temporarily blocking all westbound traffic, state police said. The state banned empty trucks and trailers on numerous major roadways.
Wednesday will again be windy, but not nearly as severe as the Tuesday gusts.
The weather in WNY will turn tranquil before another storm system blows more wind and lake effect potential for the weekend.
