NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Queens man was convicted of murder Monday after a 2019 robbery of a cellphone store ended in the death of an NYPD officer, District Attorney Melinda Katz announced.

The 28-year-old Jamaica man, Jagger Freeman, and his accomplice 30-year-old Christopher Ransom, went into a Richmond Hill T-Mobile store on Feb. 12 just after 6 p.m. with intentions to rob the establishment.
Ransom used a fake gun that looked realistic to force two employees to give him cash and merchandise from the back of the store.
When police officers arrived, Ranson pointed the gun at them, at which point the cops started firing their weapons.
One 42-year-old officer, Brian Simonsen, a 19-year-old force veteran, was caught in the crossfire and fatally hit in the torso. Another officer was injured from a bullet to his leg.
“The jury has spoken. The defendant’s actions set in motion a terrible chain of events that began with an armed robbery in progress and resulted in the tragic loss of Detective Brian Simonsen as well as Sergeant Matthew Gorman being shot in the leg,” Katz said. “Following an eight-week-long trial, a jury found the defendant guilty of murder. We express our condolences to Detective Simonsen’s family and hope today’s verdict brings them a measure of closure.”
Ransom previously pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and robbery. He serving 33 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
Freeman was found guilty of murder, robbery and assault charges. He faces up to 25 years in prison when he sentenced on June 30.
