6 Rings Mailbag: Is quarterback or head coach a bigger need for the Patriots?

Heading into Thursday's Patriots practice, it was reported last Wednesday night that the team has made a decision at starting quarterback. According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, they'll go with Bailey Zappe under center this Sunday versus the Chargers.

As such, here's what stood out in what was (sort of) the first practice of the Zappe Era in New England:

Attendance:

Absent:
WR Demario Douglas
WR Kayshon Boutte

IR:
CB Marcus Jones
DL Daniel Ekuale
CB Christian Gonzalez
LB Matthew Judon
OT Riley Reiff
OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr.
WR Kendrick Bourne

Other Notes:

- Bailey Zappe and Bill O'Brien could be seen having a lengthy conversation during stretch. The OC getting into the new starting QB's ear.

- WR/RB Ty Montgomery returned to practice on Thursday after missing Wednesday's practice with an illness.

- Rookie WR Demario Douglas was absent from practice for the second day in a row as he is in concussion protocol. Fellow rookie pass catcher Kayshon Boutte was missing as well. He popped up on Wednesday's injury report with a shoulder injury.

- Kicker Mathew Wright, who the Patriots will reportedly be signing to the practice squad, was present wearing jersey No. 47. He'll likely be replacing WR Mathew Sexton, who was not at practice.
