jones and mego: bailey zappe joins the show following patriots 6-0 loss to the chargers
As I’m sure you’re well aware of by now, the Patriots made a quarterback change on Sunday, benching former starter Mac Jones in favor of backup Bailey Zappe.
The second-year signal caller, in his first start of the season, completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 141 yards as New England fell 6-0 to the Chargers.
During what was likely an odd and awkward week for the two, Zappe told WEEI’s Jones and Mego on Monday that (Mac) Jones was a huge help to him and the Patriots’ offense this past week as they prepared for Los Angeles:
“He helped a lot,” the quarterback explained. “As far as the preparation throughout the week if, you know, kind of seeing it from outside. Him watching film, me watching film, sometimes I pick up on things, he picks up on things, and we just kind of combine minds with, you know, all four of us. Me, Will [Grier], Malik [Cunningham], all of those guys we just, whatever which one of us sees [something], we tell the other and he helped a lot, especially in the game, if he saw some things he let me or [Bill O’Brien] know.”
Zappe was then asked what Jones has been like as a teammate over the last two seasons:
He’s a good teammate,” he explained. “I think, between both of us, we both want to win, and that’s the main thing. We’re going to do, whoever’s out there, we’re going to try to help each other out to achieve that goal.”
Just a few weeks ago, it was reported by the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan that there was a split in New England’s locker room, with one source saying the locker room was ‘80-20 out on Mac’. Zappe was asked on Monday if he feels there are some Patriots players that are ‘Mac guys’ and others that are ‘his guys’:
"No, not at all,” Zappe said. “I think we've done a really good job this year of staying together as a team, both offense and defense, and I've, from, my standpoint, have yet to see any division between anybody right now."
Zappe also spoke about his comfortability in the Patriots’ offense, if he knows who will start at quarterback this week, and more on Monday’s edition of Jones and Mego. You can listen to the full interview here.
