Gonzalez wore the No. 0 in college while at the University of Oregon, where he was He was named first-team All PAC-12 in 2022 after a season where he tallied 45 tackles, 7 pass breakups, and 3 interceptions.
Upon being drafted by the Patriots with the 17th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gonzalez was assigned No. 50 (like most recent first-round rookies were under Bill Belichick) before switching to No. 19 in preseason and then to No. 6 ahead of the regular season.
Through his first three games last season, Gonzalez tallied 16 total tackles, one sack, one interception, and three passes defensed against the likes of star wide receivers A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Garrett Wilson. A performance that won him September’s AFC Rookie of the Month award.
In New England's Week 4 contest against the Cowboys, however, Gonzalez dislocated his shoulder and missed the remainder of the season following surgery to repair a torn labrum.
Entering his second season with high hopes as the team's de facto CB1, the 21-year-old looks to become the first Patriot in history to wear jersey No. 0.
