SOUTHGATE (WWJ) – An 11-year-old boy is being questioned after police say he shot a classmate with a BB gun at an elementary school in Southgate on Wednesday.

Police tell WWJ the incident happened around 1 p.m. during recess at Shelters Elementary School, near Dix Toledo and Northline Roads.

The student was struck in the back by the BB gun, authorities said. Officials have not released any details about the student who was shot.

That student suffered a minor injury, according to police.

Detective Sgt. Michael Murphy with the Southgate Police Department said the student was arrested and taken into custody, since his decision to bring a BB gun to school could put somebody in harm's way -- and it did.

"The 11-year-old just made a poor choice, as some children do," said Murphy.

A report from WDIV in Detroit says a school official told parents in an email that any weapon or look-a-like weapon is not allowed to be on school property.

Prosecutors are currently deciding whether or not to pursue charges.
