DETROIT (WWJ) A 14-year-old girl drowned in the Detroit River, police said, during a family graduation party at a park on Saturday.
Detroit Police (DPD) said they received a call at around 8:30 p.m. June 27, about two girls who were struggling in the water, at Maheras-Gentry Park on the city's east side.
Police, Detroit Harbormasters and the Coast Guard all responded.
Bystanders were able to pull the 9-year-old girl from the water.
However, the teen went under and did not resurface, prompting officers to launch a rescue effort.
"Unfortunately, our rescue efforts turned into a recovery effort," Commander of DPD's Fifth Precinct Lawrence Purifoy said. "Her body was recovered, and unfortunately she is no longer with us."
According to reports, the 14-year-old girl saw her younger cousin fall into the water, and had jumped into try to save her.
The Detroit Police Department extended their condolences to the girl's family.
The other teen is expected to be okay.
