(WWJ) A reminder comes Friday from Michigan State Police after a metro Detroit family discovered some old grenades in a box in their home.
This time, the Canton Township residents "did everything right," MSP said. They saw the box and called their local police who responded and assessed the scene. Canton Police in turn contacted the State Police Bomb Squad, which came out and determined that the grenades were inert.
Police are presenting the incident as a great example of "what to do" if you find yourself in a similar situation.
"Many families have to clean out the homes of family that have passed and may have military souvenirs packed away from their service," MSP said. "If you come across something that you feel may be explosive, the first thing you should do is STOP!"
In other cases, residents grab the items drive down to the local police station or State Police post and slide them across the desk, MSP said. Many times these items are actually live and very unstable. "Don’t take any chances!" police stressed. "Just leave them alone and call 911. They will take it from there."
The origin of the items in the Canton case are unclear. No further information was released.
