DETROIT (WWJ) -- Crews have started digging through a landfill in an effort to find Zion Foster's remains.
"Operation Justice for Zion" was organized by the Detroit Police Department in partnership with federal, state and local organizations. Its operation started phase one on Tuesday with searchers looking through the Lenox Township landfill for any evidence regarding Foster's disappearance.
Phase one includes the removal of 20 feet of trash that's above the area where they believe Foster is.
Michigan CAT has provided some of the heavy equipment necessary to complete this task, said the DPD. Those operating the machinery are city employees from the General Services Division and the Department of Public Works.
The DPD said a road will be installed where crews will inspect materials found in the targeted area.
"Our top priority is to maintain a safe working environment for searchers" said the DPD.
Authorities said they anticipate phase one will take approximately two weeks.
