MEMPHIS, Mich. (WWJ) -- A 32-year-old man charged with murder in the death of his roommate in their northern Macomb County apartment is claiming self-defense.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said Emmanuel Glass of Memphis, Michigan, was arraigned in 42-1 Romeo District Court on Friday on one count of second degree murder, and ordered held without bond.
Deputies responded Tuesday night to an apartment complex in the village of Memphis, which straddles the border between Macomb and St. Clair counties. Inside an apartment unit they found 65-year-old Dale Eplett dead of blunt force trauma.
According to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, it's alleged that Glass kicked and struck Eplett in the head, and pushed a bookcase onto him. Eplett was declared dead at the scene
The sheriff's office said investigators learned that Eplett and Glass shared the apartment together in Memphis, noting that the two men were not related and did not have an intimate relationship.
Glass, who was arrested at the scene, is lodged in the Macomb County Jail.
It's unclear what led up to the killing, although one witness told deputies he heard yelling coming from the apartment earlier that evening.
According to prosecutors, Glass is not denying his roll in the victim's death, but is claiming that he acted in self defense.
Glass is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference on November 9. He faces up to life in prison if convicted as charged.
