BERLIN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A crash involving a semi on I-75 in Monroe County left a Detroit man in critical condition, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.
Sheriff's officials told WWJ the crash happened on Monday, April 6, on the northbound side of the freeway near Sigler Road in Berlin Township. Deputies learned of the crash around 5:10 a.m.
Authorities said their preliminary investigation revealed the 39-year-old Detroit man was driving a 2015 Honda Pilot in the right lane. For unknown reasons, the SUV came to a "complete stop" in the travel lane. A 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer struck his vehicle from behind.
The force pushed the Honda off the freeway to the east. It came to rest facing southwest on the shoulder of the freeway. The freightliner jackknifed. It left the freeway to the north, and stopped against the the median guardrail.
According to sheriff's officials, the Detroit man was not wearing a seatbelt. His airbags failed to deploy. First responders rushed him to Corewell Health Trenton, where he's listed in critical condition.
The operator of the Freightliner is identified as Samuel Carmon, 49, of Toledo, Ohio. He is also hospitalized at Corewell Health Trenton in serious condition. Authorities said they are withholding the Detroit man's name pending notification of his family.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The Berlin Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, Michigan State Police, MDOT and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Victim's Services and Chaplain Program assisted at the scene.
