DETROIT (WWJ) -- A staple of the Detroit holiday season is returning this weekend – the outdoor ice skating rink at Campus Martius Park.
The Rink at Campus Martius will officially open to skaters Friday, Nov. 18, at 9 p.m., following the 19th annual Detroit Tree Lighting, which gets underway at 5 p.m.
This is also the 19th year for The Rink at Campus Martius, managed by the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP), who announced Monday that Visit Detroit has renewed its commitment as the presenting sponsor of the rink for three more years.
The rink – which is even bigger than New York City’s Rockefeller Center skating rink – returns a year after setting a new record last year, with nearly 100,000 people skating during the 2021 season.
Right in the heart of downtown, the rink is also the heart of the city’s holiday season, serving as a base for dozens of community events and campaigns -- including Figure Skating in Detroit, Make-A-Wish, Menorah in the D, Salvation Army and the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation.
Admission for skating is $12 for adults, $9 for children 12 and under, as well as seniors 59 and older, and $8 for military and first responders. Skate rental is $6. Tickets, group sales and skate rentals can be purchased at the rink or over the phone at 313-963-9393.
The rink is open daily, including holidays, through March 5.
