LSU hires outside firm to manage new NIL landscape; 'it’s going to be great,' Orgeron says

As LSU football players navigate the new landscape of name, image and likeness, they'll do so with the blessing of their head coach.

Ed Orgeron said on SportsTalk with Bobby Hebert, Mike Detillier and Kristian Garic Wednesday evening that LSU has hired an outside firm to help manage the changes that allow players to enter into profitable partnerships, which started July 1.

“Very supportive," Orgeron said. "I think it’s going to be great. Like everything else, there’s going to be some kinks to work out.”

It didn't take long for Tigers football players to dive into the NIL pool, with stars like Myles Brennan and Derek Stingley announcing partnerships with local businesses including Walk-Ons, Smoothie King and other businesses within hours of the new rules going into effect.

But with all those new opportunities, Orgeron reinforced the need to "compartmentalize." When it's time for football, it needs to be all football within the program.

“The game is changing fast. As I get older I’m going to have to change,” Orgeron said. “ ... But once we get into the football meeting, it’s got to be football.”

WHEN WILL THE QB DECISION BE MADE?

Orgeron wouldn't tip his hand on whether he expects Myles Brennan or Max Johnson to come out of the offseason's QB competition with the starting job. He expects it the pick to become clear on its own, though, as the process continues.

“Both those guys, along with [freshman Garrett Nussmeier], are having some great summers," Orgeron said. "I think it’s going to work itself out. It’s going to be obvious.”

Brennan started the first three games of the 2021 season, but went out for the remainder of the season with a significant abdominal tear. TJ Finley got the first crack at the starting job, but eventually gave way to Johnson, who was impressive in a pair of wins to close out the season. All four Tigers quarterbacks took snaps in the LSU spring game this offseason, with Finley choosing to transfer to Auburn.
