The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board says one of the turbines that powers the city's drainage pumps is temporarily offline.
"Turbine 5 is temporarily out of service, reducing SWBNO's 25Hz power generation capacity to 51.5MW," the agency announced. "At peak demand, our system requires 44MW of 25Hz power."
S&WB officials say their maintenance crews discovered a faulty temperature sensor, and they believe the issue is limited to one section of the control system.
"We have consulted with the manufacturer, GE, to provide the necessary replacement parts and labor. Repairs are anticipated to be completed within two weeks," officials said.
That two week repair schedule comes about a week before the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.
