A fatal medical emergency caused a single-vehicle crash in Slidell on Monday, police say.

That crash happened around 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Gause Boulevard and Pearl Street. According to a Slidell Police Department spokesperson, a 73-year-old man driving a pickup truck suffered a likely heart attack moments before his truck struck a utility pole. When officers arrived, the man was unconscious and not breathing. First responders tried to resuscitate the man, but those efforts proved to be futile.

The police spokesperson says the man suffered minor injuries in the crash, leading investigators to believe his death was the result of the medical incident and not of the crash.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family.
