NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Officials on Friday afternoon pulled out a man who drowned after he went swimming with two others at Rockaway Beach.
According to officials, just before 3 p.m. three men in their 20s got pulled in by a current that got too strong near Rockaway Freeway and Beach 86th Street.
New York City beaches are currently closed amid the coronavirus.
"We just lost a young man who got caught in a dangerous current in the Rockaways," Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted. "Our hearts break for his family and his friends."
"I need every New Yorker to heed the warning: there's NO swimming on our beaches during this crisis. It is NOT safe," he added. "We don't want want to fence off the beaches but we will if we have to. "
De Blasio also said there will be additional NYPD and Parks staff walking the beaches this weekend to keep New Yorkers safe.
