NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Twenty-three people were injured -- 19 firefighters and 4 civilians -- in an out-of-control fire that was upgraded from a five-alarm to six-alarm blaze at a six-story apartment building in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood, the FDNY said Wednesday night.
All of the injuries are not life-threatening.
Officials say 54 families have been displaced due to the severe damage to their apartments. A roof collapse and other fire-related damage may force the building to be condemned by the DOB.
FDNY chief John Sudnik said a total of 250 firefighters and EMS members responded to the blaze.
The fire on the top floor of the building broke out just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Video shows flames being whipped about by high winds as thick black smoke billows into the air.Firefighters had to be pulled out.of the building for safety reasons, Sudnik said.
"We pulled all Firefighters out for safety reasons and operated with exterior tower ladders, it is now a total exterior operation," read an FDNY tweet Wednesday night.
Another FDNY tweet read, "The wind conditions are very serious and severe tonight, we had 20-30 mph winds gusting to over 40 mph."
