NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- The Essex County Correctional Facility has confirmed that a second ICE detainee has tested positive for coronavirus. The 52-year-old man was being held at a facility in Newark and was sent to University hospital on March 22 for a different issue.

During his stay, the detainee began to display symptoms consistent with coronavirus and a test was administered and came back positive, a statement from the Essex County jail said.

He currently remains in isolation at University Hospital and Essex County said that all appropriate procedures for both detainees and staff are being followed.
Some detainees who are fearful of the spread have gone on hunger strike to demand release, Gothamist reports.
