NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A large fire burned through multiple homes in Queens on Sunday morning, leaving eight people injured in its wake, including one off-duty firefighter who was seriously injured.

Four firefighters were among the eight people hurt in the fire, the FDNY said. The other four people injured were residents.

One of the injured was an off-duty firefighter who jumped in to help, the FDNY told 1010 WINS. He suffered serious injuries in the fire, while the rest of the injuries were non-life-threatening.

The fire erupted near 101st Avenue and 78th Street in Ozone Park around 11 a.m. and eventually tore through multiple structures, fire officials said.

Some 200 firefighters and EMS members responded to the four-alarm blaze, the FDNY said. At least six homes and one business burned in the fire, which was fanned by strong winds Sunday.

Citizens App video shows heavy smoke pouring over the neighborhood. Firefighters at the scene are barely visible amid the thick smoke. Crowds of residents watched as firefighters were battled to extinguish the blaze. It was brought under control around 1:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire isn’t known. The fire marshal is investigating.
