9 arrested as protesters hold 'die-in' at 30 Rock rink

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – At least nine people were arrested as hundreds staged a "die-in" at the Rockefeller Center skating rink Saturday afternoon to protest climate change, police say.

Eight were arrested for disorderly conduct and one was arrested for public endangerment, according to the NYPD.

Nearly 300 people were taking part in the protest at the world-famous skating rink, which sees thousands of visitors this time of year.

Police said the protests were lying on the ice, and photos appear to show a group of them forming a human circle on the rink as skaters watch on.

There are reports that at least one person was arrested for climbing the art deco statue on Rockefeller Plaza, but police said they couldn't confirm that. A photo appears to show a man holding a "climate change = mass murder" sign on the statue.
