NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — When it comes to combating climate change, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg is putting his money where his mouth is.
Bloomberg has announced a $500 million investment in the Beyond Carbon Initiative, an effort to close all of the nation's remaining coal-fired power plants by 2013 and put the U.S. on track toward a 100 percent clean energy economy.
The organization will bypass the federal government and instead will aim to pass climate and clean energy policies at the state and local level and support political candidates who are on board with that goal.
Bloomberg says we're in a race against time with climate change and while Mother Nature isn't waiting for bold federal action on the issue, neither can we.
He will formally kick off the program when he gives the commencement address at MIT on Friday.
